Just my thought - when somebody gives you something, anything, so long as their motives are that of caring for you in some way, a thank you is appropriate. Even if you don't really "feel" the thank you. Even if you're not really "thankful" for it. Because it's not lying, it's an affirmation to the other person that their effort is not in vain. Basically, it's looking out for the other person's feelings.
