This is what they are all like, in my opinion. They aren't talent contests as such the way I see it, they are popularity contests. To achieve any kind of success out of it you either have to win it and therefore get at least short-term success in the form of one single or album. Or you have to have something about you, a quality or a look that people are drawn to, something that makes you stand out. Or just be so amazingly bad that people have a twisted interest in you.

Simon Cowell can't make any money out of you if you are middle of the road.
