It's almost like when people explain how they can tolerate the taste of diet soda. They usually say "if you drink it long enough, you begin to like it", which to me, translates to: "If you repress your own preferences enough, you begin to enjoy things you wouldn't ordinarily enjoy." The problem I have with that is the concept relies on the person changing, rather than the thing being consumed getting any better. While I'm completely open to the fact that we all change; right now, at this moment, I'm grounded in my sense of self and that sense says this album will only get any better if I change my personal standards about what means what to me, which is really not something I can force, and still feel like a genuine person.

I'm OK with placing first impressions a few pegs higher than gradual acceptance. I feel better about judging something based on what I already know, rather than what I may eventually accept.
I see what you mean, but I don't think that can apply to music. If I don't like a certain song there is no amount of times in the world that you can play it to get me to like it. In fact, I'll probably like it less. With growers like Radiohead, listening to it multiple times helps you notice little subtleties that you wouldn't notice with just one listen.

Granted, there has to be something the piques your interest on the first go around. Why would you bother figuring out the subtleties of an album that you didn't feel some connection to?

Edit:

Thought I would actually give my opinion on the new album. It's good, but Radiohead have officially passed their peak. I suspected it with In Rainbows, but now I'm sure. They've got the Radiohead weirdness-but-it-sounds-original formula down pat. Ok Computer (and even the Bends to a certain extent) all the way to Hail to the Thief really were groundbreaking in my opinion, but it had to end sometime.

Don't get me wrong, I do like the album a lot. There is a more ambient edge to it compared to their other stuff. I just think their "Where the **** did they come up with this???" days are over.
