Default Upcoming May Theme Comp : Ambient

May Bi-Monthly Upcoming Theme Is : Ambient

Send up to two tracks to : toretorden

Deadline : 20th of May

May's theme, as voted forth by you lot, will be ambient. Wikipedia currently defines ambient music like this :

Another rough characteristic of ambient music is that it doesn't demand your attention. If you don't devote your attention to it, it should be easily "ignorable" unless at very high volume as it sort of provides or flavours the audible background in your environment. Of course that doesn't mean it shouldn't be unnoticeable or boring!

Beyond this simple description, whether or not a slice of music is ambient or not is largely up to you. Find a couple of tracks and send them my way.

Default Ambient Music

(Here is a short article that I found over the internet concerning ambient music) I think that the right term for ambient music is New Age. New Age is peaceful music of various styles, which is intended to create inspiration, relaxation, and positive feelings, often used by listeners for yoga, massage, inspiration, relaxation, meditation, and reading as a method of stress management or to create a peaceful atmosphere in their home or other environments often associated with environmentalism and New Age Spirituality. The harmonies in new age music are generally modal, consonant, or include a drone bass. The melodies are often repetitive, to create a hypnotic feeling, and sometimes recordings of nature sounds are used as an introduction to a track or throughout the piece. These songs can go beyond 30 minutes of playing.

^The right term for ambient music is "new age"? Why shouldn't it just be ambient?

New age is used to describe stuff like Enigma's Return to Innocence or Coldcut's Timber. To me, it makes sense to be able to differentiate between that and, say, Brian Eno's Music for Airports.

I cant find the article and the name of the editor that did the review I posted right at this minute, I will see if I can get his name & reason for suggesting new age later on today. The only reason I can think of why to use the label new age would be because of all of the other terms associated with ambient music.
disreet music
experimental music
background music
space music
mood music
& elevator music
subtypes of ambient music are:
dark ambient
ambient techno
& ambient trance.
