Math rock peaked in the mid-’90s, when groups like Polvo and Chavez had small but dedicated followings among indie rockers on college campuses.

It is related to post-rock, a result of a shared scene of origin. There are differences to be noted between early post-rock and math-rock as well, though: whereas post-rock has distinct jazz influences, math rock is more dense and complex, filled with difficult time signatures and intertwining phrases. The style is a little more ‘rockist’ than post-rock, since it’s usually played by small, guitar-led bands."

I'm aware some bands like Drive Like Jehu are kind of iffy when it comes to labeling them as Math Rock but I still thought it fit well. Same goes for lightning bolt, I just threw in my favorite song of theirs for ****s.
Half of this i know is awesome, the other half i want to hear. Thank you!

I wanted to redo this comp because my previous attempt at one from these guys was too long and had alot of songs that i felt weren't the best for this as well as songs that i realized i missed, so here's

The Beginner's Guide To Butthole Surfers

(link in the picture)

This is a band that people either worship or despise. Formed in San Antonio, Texas in 1981, this group started out as punk/heavy outfit but soon started to become incorporate more experimental ventures in their music, like psychedelic, country, punk and metal, partially due to the band's reported use of psychedelic drugs. This forms an overall sound that can go from fun alternative rock to the deepest depths of experimentation. They are also notoriously known for their over the top live shows, which featured strobe lights, lighting equipment on fire, surgical films being played during their sets, and naked dancers. Now, with over 15 albums and 20+ years later, the group is still going strong.

this comp covers their early days in the 80s with EPs and their first full length album, to their push into the mainstream with their only gold record to date, Electriclarryland, as well as the resulting records after. Be forewarned, if you've never ventured into experimental music before, this may be a little much to take in.

Birds ~ Electriclarryland
Creep In The Cellar ~ Rembrandt Pussyhorse
Sweat Loaf ~ Locust Abortion Technician
Bong Song ~ Widowmaker![EP]
Graveyard ~ Locust Abortion Technician
Hey ~ Butthole Surfers [EP]
One Hundred Million People Dead ~ Humpty Dumpty LSD
The Wooden Song ~ Independent Worm Saloon
Ricky ~ Hairway to Steven
The Shame of Life ~ The Weird Revolution
Lonesome Bulldog ~ Pioughd
Pepper~Electriclarryland
Pittsburgh to Lebanon ~ Locust Abortion Technician
Tongue ~ Independent Worm Saloon
Booze, Tobacco, Dope, Pussy, Cars ~Widowmaker![EP]
Chewin' George Lucas' Chocolate ~ Independent Worm Saloon
Goofy's Concern ~ Independent Worm Saloon
The Hurdy Gurdy Man ~ Pioughd
Wichita Cathedral ~ Butthole Surfers[EP]
Butthole Surfer ~ Psychic... Powerless... Another Man's Sac
Perry ~ Rembrandt Pussyhorse
Blindman ~ Pioughd
Cherub ~ Psychic... Powerless... Another Man's Sac
Ah Ha ~ Electriclarryland
Jet Fighter ~ The Weird Revolution
Earthquake ~ Humpty Dumpty LSD
Gary Floyd ~ Psychic... Powerless... Another Man's Sac
The Shah Sleeps in Lee Harvey's Grave (Live) ~ Live PCPPEP
Tornadoes ~ Rembrandt Pussyhorse
E.D.G.A.R. ~ Independent Worm Saloon
The Ballad of Naked Man ~ Independent Worm Saloon

note: i apologize for the sheer length of this compilation, but seeing as this is just a small percentage of their overall material i tried to trim it down as much as i could and at the same time trying to represent their overall sound.

The Beginner's Guide to Modern Electro.. Stuff

Electro, like most Electronic genres, originated in the 80s. Today's Electro may take influence from those times, but within the last year or two a wave of crazy youngins have stepped it up a notch. Some songs may sound like the mainstream Electro House sound, like Deadmau5, while other artists like Uppermost pump up the distortion and aggression just enough to break your speakers. They all come from different backgrounds. Some started out mainstream and decided to start experimenting and others have just began producing. There's a common link between them all though: distortion, heaviness, and a lot of of emphasis on insanely catchy melodies. Think of an amalgamation of Techno, Electro, House, and some extra added stuff and you kinda get the idea.. perhaps. Enjoy!

Defeat - BNDTS (Haezer Remix)
The Subs - Vomit in Style (VNNR Remix)
The Toxic Avenger - Rush Hour
Project Cyborg - Angerland 3000
Kamui - Electro Slut
She's Drunk - Complication
Sick Boy - Bang Your Head (Clockwork Remix)
Skrillex - My Name is Skrillex
Clouds - Bebas (Ado!'s Compliance Remix)
Uppermost - Take a Blow
Cheb'Five - A Squirtin' Orgasm
Aerotronic - Sex and Cigarettes
Cyberpunkers - OMG (Belzebass Remix)

Church burnings, murder, suicide, nazism, and blasphemy. It's not a genre for momma and pep pep. Black Metal originated in the 1980s after some thrash metal bands started experimenting with dark imagery and dark lyrics. Now instead of just having fast and aggressive metal, you had fast, aggressive, and DARK metal. The earliest bands, like Bathory and Hellhammer, were around before it actually had a real name. Eventually more and more bands began to really bring the genre into the, well, "limelight". Though it's never really taken off, (I still can't figure out why) some bands have become pretty damn popular. Bands like Gorgoroth, Dimmu Borgir, and Mayhem all have pretty big followings. For awhile most bands were typically speaking out against Christianity and sung around church fires but not for too long.

Around 1995 a man from California named Scott Conner started a project called Xasthur. Instead of the usual Black Metal lyrical content, Xasthur sung about despair, hatred, and suicide. Out of this he influenced a new subgenre called Depressive Suicidal Black Metal. Instead of the usual growling and shrieking commonly found in Black Metal, the vocals were akin to wailing and screaming (much like that of Burzum's). Instead of beheading christians, they were hanging themselves. DSBM is still very, very low key and has not broken into the mainstream at all. Xasthur remains the biggest name. Lately, some artists have incorporated Black Metal to genres like Post Rock and Shoegaze. It's damn near impossible to find any info as it's only happened in the last year or so, but from what I know it started with Niege of Alcest, Amesoeurs, Mortifera, Peste Noire, and Lantlôs. It's slowly but surely becoming more and more popular with bands like Self-Inflicted Violence completely changing their sound to this new found genre. Well.. enjoy!

Early Black Metal:
Bathory - In Conspiracy With Satan
Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas
Darkthrone - A Blaze in the Northern Sky
Emperor - Witches Sabbath

Current Black Metal:
1349 - Slaves to Slaughter
Sortsind - Vandrer Blandt Dødninge
Nargaroth - Pisen Pro Satana
Tsjuder - Unholy Paragon

"Depressive/Suicidal" Black Metal:
Xasthur - The Prison of Mirrors
Gris - Le Gala Des Gens Heureux
... - I Can Reach the Stars...
Svedhous - A Well

Post Black Metal/Shoegaze:
Caïna - Ten Went Up River
Dernier Martyr - Follow the River, Towards the Sea
Amesoeurs - Bonheur Amputé
Heretoir - Trümmerwelten

^^^
I'll be downloading those for sho when Comcast decides it's done capping my download speeds. Those are two genres I know know nearly nothing about and only have a handful of albums from each. Can't wait. Plus since you made it I can be pretty sure it's going to be awesome, because everything you've recommended to the boards that I've checked out is just great.

A Beginners Guide to
First Wave Ska and Rocksteady

Rocksteady is the short-lived transitional genre between ska, a hybrid of traditional Jamaican folk syncopation and the influence of the American pop imports that were gracing the turntable platters in dancehalls around the island during the late 50's to early 60's, and roots reggae, made popular by the legendary Bob Marley among many others.

The defining characteristics of rocksteady can be quite ambiguous and often harbor many of the same elements as ska, its predecessor, which are mainly simple frenetic guitar rhythms and progressions, a consistent but offbeat syncopated rhythm section, and less reliance on horn melodies. Rocksteady also tends to have a slower 'steadier" tempo than ska and is more heavily influenced by the American R&B and soul releases that were reaching the island and becoming increasingly popular in dance halls at the time. Although rocksteady as a genre was particularly short-lived, from about 66-70, and quickly evolved into what we know now as roots reggae, it’s influences can be heard throughout the wider reggae genre as a whole.

This is primarily a rocksteady compilation, however there is also some first wave ska thrown into the mix simply because the distinguishing characteristics between the two genres tend to not be somewhat ambiguous at times and not completely mutually exclusive, which can sometimes make the music hard to classify. As any enthusiast of the genre will attest to, most of the rocksteady that you’ll find in digital format today is fairly obscure and hard to find, with the ubiquitous greatest hits format and genre & label compilations being the easiest way of amassing a good portion of it. If there’s anything you particularly like, give me a holler and I’ll get you sorted.

Alton Ellis - Dance Crasher
The Techniques - I'm in Love
Desmond Dekker - Rude Boy Train
The Melodians - Come on Little Girl
Hopeton Lewis - Take it Easy
Alton Ellis - Something You Got
The Ethiopians - Free Man
Bob Marley & The Wailers - Let Him Go
The Heptones - Pretty Looks Isn't All
Alton Ellis - Shake It
Phyllis Dillon - Don't stay Away
The Paragons - Silver Bird
Reuben Andersen - Wonder No More
