I can see that. I think they peaked after Reign In Blood. South of Heaven had some good songs, but wasn't really that interesting. "Spill the Blood" aside, I don't really think they truly pulled off combining their sound with melody until Seasons In the Abyss with "Dead Skin Mask" and the title track, and the rest of the album, while perfectly entertaining, wasn't really much different from their past music. And they've pretty much been treading water creatively ever since.

As said they've diversified a bit, but their trademark sound is what they do best and they themselves know it as well, they've certainly got the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" mentality. As far as that brutal, fast and relentless pummeling sound goes nobody does it better than Slayer, if they do manage to do it better, Slayer still have years of consistency on their side.

I don't think anybody can doubt the commercial importance of Metallica and agree if they hadn't cracked it, hardly anybody outside of extreme metal would've heard of Slayer.

Thank GOD! for Parental Advisory Warning stickers on albums in the 90s. How else would my teenaged self have been able to spot the awesome tapes mixed in the with the crap?

It's not just the lightning fast stuff that has me writing them off. It's that there's little to no rhythmic diversity. It's not like when Megadeth would play an old boogie tune at double or triple speed like I Ain't Superstitious. With Slayer it seems it was always built on the same rhythmic structure, that's where the diversity seems to lack. Sure they can apply dynamics to it and make them slower or more eerie, but the underlying groove doesn't seem to ever change, it's still a Slayer beat, just slower or faster, that's where the lack of dimensional depth seems apparent to me.

Really? Maybe we're talking about two different things here, but Dave Lombardo is one the main reasons I listen to Slayer. His drumming is far more interesting to me than 99.9% of Slayer's contemporaries.

Why do some people have easter eggs on their posts? I've noticed this since the easter period.
