Default Unsane

Unsane is one of those bands whose album covers always intrigued me. They first caught my eye in high school with Total Destruction, the album cover posted above. I knew nothing about them and I remember wondering what the hell a band with that kind of album art would sound like. Well, about a year or two ago I finally got around to checking them out. I got their album Occupational Hazard, and though at first I didn't listen to it very much, it has slowly become a favorite of mine when I'm in the mood for some loud, ass-kicking music. I've since got a hold of several more of their albums and have been happy to discover that all of them are really good. Anyone else a fan?

If you've never heard them, they're definitely worth checking out. Their style is kind of hard to describe: loud, distorted, kind of metal-ish, kind of noise rock-ish, a decent chunk of hardcore, a little dash of blues, but overall just really good. Here's a video I found for their song "Scrape", which is a little on the silly side but nevertheless gives a sense of their style:

I think a PM may be in order sir I have to admit that the vocals are grabbing me more than the music in that vid but I can definitely hear some Hardcore in there which is no bad thing. Brilliant album art I have to say.

I love Unsane and that video. I remember thinking of them as the one 'heavy' band on Matador for a little while - they really stood out when that was just a small nerdy indie rock label in the early 90s.

Incidentally I've watched that video about 8,000 times in the last few years because a local TV station that I used to often have on in the background shows it regularly. The broken arm at 2:56 is the best part.

Yeah, it's funny that they were ever on Matador. I was just reading an interview with them the other day where the interviewer pointed out that they were probably the only band with the distinction of having been on both Matador and Relapse.

All the albums I have by them (s/t; Total Destruction; Scattered, Smothered & Covered; Occupational Hazard) are really good, with Occupational Hazard being my favorite. I still haven't given their two albums from the 00s a listen yet.

I'm a Matador junkie, this sounds like something right up my alley.

Unsane are easily in my top five bands of all time....and its a shame that it would seem they broke for good this time

i agree its very strange that these guys have been on Matador and Atlantic Records(for Total Destruction)....both Relapse and Amphetamine Reptile make 100% sense....

this band helped save me from becoming some snot nosed shithead punk elitist.....

their last two albums are as good as the old ones....just with a bit of maturity to them....but without taking from the core sound

by far Scattered Smothered and Coverd is...in my opinion....their greatest album...mainly for this song....if that can't get your heart beating you're dead

when they first broke up in 1998 Chris Spencer (singer/guitar) started a band called Cutthroat 9 which release a single, ep and one full length on Reptilian....amazing band...pretty much Unsane with a faster tempo

Cutthroat 9

he is now in a great band called Celan with members of Einsturzende Neubauten and Oxbow.....who have released one album

Celan
^this is an amazing band

Lambhouse is basically a "greatest hits" album....but in the vein of Death In June and Throbbing Gristle...more like the artist choosing the songs they enjoyed the most
