Today I was listening to a studio version of "In the Flesh," one of my favorite Blondie songs (see two posts above). Hearing this version made me appreciate even more Debbie Harry's smooth, silky voice, and the song's structure.
You can hear the vocal chorus (sounding like two different singers) panned left and right, respectively, which I assume is her voice overdubbed. The vocal chorus of this song is predominant and gives it a rich, lush, warm sound. I hadn't noticed the tubular bells so distinctly before. I love tubular bells. I also like the electric guitar in this piece. It often is played very quietly and sounds as if it is panned entirely to the left as it strums short, jangly chords. A very pretty song, I feel. I wonder if this may have been different with a healthy and stable core for all their years. |

The 12" extended version is absolutely to die for.
I love Debbie Harry. She's really something else. I have a couple Blondie albums on vinyl, and would have collected more if I wasn't broke at the time. A little browsing can also lead you to some extended mixes of "Heart of Glass" and "Rapture".

Parallel Lines - I think that was their most consistent album and ran a gamut of styles with stuff like 'Sunday Girl' and the awesome 'Fade Away and Radiate', still my favorite Blondie song of all time. "Wrapped like candy in a blue blue neon glow" - what a great line!

Yeah, Debbie Harry's fantastic. I sat through a high school concert where this girl tried to sing "Call Me," and I went home right after to wash out my ears with the actual version. Nobody sings like she does.
Rapture is probably my personal favorite. Gotta learn the lyrics to the rap bit. |

First post time! Just joined.
I like Blondie a lot and there was a documentary a while ago on BBC3 in the UK which kind of followed the story from CBGBs up to the Hall of Fame performance. Great story and great frontwoman. A bold statement earlier about Blondie being the only decent female-fronted band. During Britpop in the UK, some of the 'second' tier bands like Sleeper, Echobelly and Elastica were all female fronted (and a band called Republica). All had a decent stab at the female-fronted band but success was short-lived. I would offer The Cardigans as the nearest and most recent band you could compare to Blondie - at least in terms of being pop/guitar orientated, having some good crossover moments but also some great udner-rated tracks and albums. |
