Exo's Saved Section
I never do journals. Here's a journal.
I always forget about albums I put in my saved section of Spotify. I decided I'd go back and listen to them so this journal will be a place for me to talk about them. Short "reviews" will be a part of it. I know a lot of you don't like content dumps like I do. Follow me as I rediscover albums that could be great or make me question why I put them in the saved section in the first place. First post coming soon because I just thought of this and I don't like to wait. |

The Stevenson Ranch Davidians Psalms, Hymns, & Spiritual Songs
Spoiler for TRACKS:
So this album came out in 2006. Sounds older. Band has a nice psych sound to it under the indie lyrics and vocals. It just sounds like something Built to Spill would put out in the 90's. That's not a bad thing. I'm just surprised it's from 2006. "Nature Boy" is a sweet track. I can see myself listening to this on a summer day driving around. The band name is pretty sweet too. I gotta say. It's like The Samuel Jackson Five but not as good. Or Andrew Jackson Jihad. I like these kind of band names. I will say that you really have to enjoy the first couple songs of this album because the rest of it sounds pretty much the same. Tight contemporary psych sound throughout, and something I'll think about keeping in the saved section. |

Haisuinonasa Machi Ni Tsuite 1. Heinestu No Machi 2. Happy End 3. Toshi No Kioku 4. Tooriame 5. Circle 6. Shounen No Te *No Youtube videos exist for this album unfortunately. Japanese Math Rock! The Japanese sure do love their finer picking guitars and odd time signatures don't they? This EP doesn't really break too many barriers but it's still an enjoyable listen. Toe is still the pinnacle of the genre with Mouse on the Keys following close behind but I enjoyed this EP for what it is. Reminded me of a lot of stuff LITE does. They throw some piano in there too which is nice. This isn't something I'm necessarily going to keep saved but it was nice to hear it again. I'm a sucker for Japanese doodling. |

Them, Roaring Twenties Future Sandwich Spoiler for MUSIC:
1. It's Time for a Dip in the Sectretarial Pool 2. HarryCareyFontierGuideHawkeye 3. We Prefer a Little Hair Down There 4. Go To: www.eeob.net/freestuff 5. Labia Arabia 6. Fast Aching NIte-Nite Spray with Realistic Uncle Beard 7. One Always Looks Neat in a Hat Made of Meat 8. 10 Million Scientists Can't Be Wrong Holy Jesus look at those song titles. That was fun typing. No it wasn't. This album was released in 2008 and the band hasn't done sh*t since. That seems to be the case with a good number of math rock bands. Remember Piglet? Remember that band? They were amazing and they had one EP and that's it. Huge bummer. This band isn't that amazing. Funny song titles and some doodily doo guitar work that every math rock band seems to employ. I wouldn't check them out unless you really like math rock. I sorta like math rock when a band can do other things. This one can't that much. I'm going to unsave this one. |

Living Hour Living Hour Spoiler for MUSIC:
1. Summer Smog 2. Seagull 3. This is the Place 4. Steady Glazed Eyes 5. There is No Substance Between 6. Mind Goodbyes 7. Miss Emerald Green 8. Feel Shy This one has been in my saved section forever and for some reason I don't have the heart to get rid of it. Lush dream pop with some shoegaze trimmings to go along with it. Hazy guitars and just an overall sense of this dreamy soundscape. I like the album a lot. This is their debut album from early last year so hopefully they'll release a follow up in the near future. You're not getting something unique but I'm the biggest sucker for this kind of sound. I'll eat it up all day. I'm going to keep this is the saved section for a little while longer. |

Esmé Patterson What Do You Call a Woman? Spoiler for MUSIC:
1. What Do You Call a Woman? 2. Oh Let's Dance 3. Wildflower Single release plus some other songs thrown in there. First off, that girl is gorgeous. Like, wow. Damn. Okay. Her music is really...nice. That's a positive statement. It's just that I don't think she stands out enough to make me save this. She has three albums that I need to listen to though. I do like her music. She kind of has a Leslie Feist sort of thing going which is never a bad thing. This is leaving the saved section but I'll be listening to her again. |

Covet Currents Spoiler for FULL ALBUM:
1. Pelagic 2. Nautilus 3. Hydra 4. Charybdis 5. Currents 6. Sea Dragon Look at that. Another math rock album. This one however is pretty dern good. It's a short EP, only 23 minutes, but it fills the space very nice. They do have some light singing on the album which definitely helps the six songs stay active and not boring. They recently did an Audiotree performance as well. Female Japanese lead guitarist who basically fingerpicks the whole time. I feel like there could have been no other person more perfect to be the lead of this band. If they put out a full length LP, I'll certainly give it a listen, but this is coming out of the save section due to it just being in here far too long. |

Osibisa Osibisa Spoiler for TUNES:
1. The Dawn 2. Music For Gong Gong 3. Ayiko BIa 4. Akwaaba 5. Oranges 6. Phallus C 7. Think About the People World/Jazz/Funk album from 1971 from one of the first bands to really popularize the world music scene in London. Pretty bitchin' album. I'm going to try to find this on vinyl. This album has horns and occasionally pretty funny lyrics. Phallus C talks about a black dudes large weener I believe. I could be wrong. That's just what I heard. This will leave the saved section but enter my discogs wantlist so I remember to buy it one day. |

That Handsome Devil A City Dressed in Dynamite Spoiler for TUNES:
1. Damn Door 2. Wintergreen 3. Rob The Prez-O-Dent 4. Pills For Everything 5. Cry 6. Kiss the Cook 7. Viva Discordia 8. Squares 9. Mexico 10. Reagan's Kids 11. Treefood This album is pretty wild. It's like a soulful rockabilly romp through the head of Dick Dale if Dick Dale was really into Screamin' Jay Hawkins and Screamin' Jay was really into hip hop and creepy as funk. That's a mouthful but that's what it sounds like. Every song pretty much includes a new genre of music but it all has this kind of spooky Halloween gonzo like acid trip feel. It's hard to describe. They're from Brooklyn which scores major points with me. I'll have to see if they're playing any time soon because they sound like they'd be a riot. Look at the band lineup... Godforbid - vocals, songwriter Jeremy Page - guitar, bass, keyboard, banjo, pedal steel, glockenspiel, percussion, accordion, synthesizer, kazoo, background vocals, songwriter Naoko Takamoto - backing vocals Evan Sanders - keyboard, trumpet, trombone Jeremy Siegel - bass, background vocals Sam Merrick - drums Deflon Sallahr - live show hype man Andy Bauer - drums, percussion, accordion, guitar, backing vocals LIVE SHOW HYPE MAN. That's awesome. I'm going to try to see these guys. This one is staying in the saved section. |
