Likewise, it would be easy to say that early morning FM radio hosts have no talent, since all they do is talk, but not just anyone can do that. It takes a certain "personality skill set" to do what they do. @Ki - Check out Day[9]'s Amnesia and Slender playthroughs for someone who I think is actually being 100% genuine when he screams like a little girl. He'll freak out (he actually tried playing Slender while covering his eyes at one point) but then give an embarrassed laugh that doesn't at all feel played up. He's just that big a bitch.

His Amnesia playthrough seems to have been the point at which the world discovered what a pussy he was. Otherwise he seems to do mostly Starcraft commentary and analysis.

I love horror games. That much is obvious. I also love it when I run into a memorable character in a video game. Whether they're funny, or serious, or whatever, a good character in a horror game, or in any game can really make the game that much better. I'm going to talk about a few characters that I love. First up we have... The witch from the Left 4 Dead games. I don't really remember the first time I ran into this enemy when I was playing these games for the first time. But what I do remember is that the terrifying scream it released as I got closer to it was one of the scariest things i've ever heard. This character really adds a certain amount of difficulty to an already difficult game. You pretty much do not want to piss this character off. Although I have my own opinions about the games in general, Freddy Fazbear is still a great character along with the other animatronic characters you find in the Five Nights at Freddy's games. I would definitely not want to be seen stuck in a room knowing that things like this were trying to find me. I'm not very good with figuring out the names of monsters and characters in video games when the names don't show up in the game itself, so i'll just call this "monster in the water". If you've played Amnesia: The Dark Descent, you already know how terrifying this monster can be. Basically, it's one of the first times in the game where you realize just how terrifyingly awesome the game is. It'll also make you want to stay out of water for the rest of your life. Although Bioshock: Infinite isn't considered a horror game, there are characters in the series that make the game memorable from a scare perspective, and Lady Comstock is one of them. I don't want to really spoil much, but this is easily one of the coolest and most interesting character designs i've run into in a game. The whole idea around the character becoming what it is makes it terrifying on it's own. That's about it for the first part of this series, but i've got a lot more coming. I didn't want to fill this post up with too many pictures as I just feel like it'd look cluttered. |

The water monster was a great part in Amnesia: The Dark Descent in terms of pacing. You had already solved two of the puzzles where there was a monster and got a taste of fear and survived so you're feeling equal parts secure but still on edge, then you go into the water and get killed by something you can't even see. From there you think that it's just the Sandtrap level from Half-Life 2 and all you need to do is move from platform to platform, yet you come to the grim realization that there aren't enough platforms and you'll have to jump in the water eventually and to make matters worse you need to be in the water to crank the wheel to lift up the gate, which puts you in an incredibly vulnerable position because the piece of human the monster is snacking on won't last forever. Then to top it off you get to run a maze with the monster in hot pursuit.
Easily the best section of the game. SOMA came out today, are you going to get it? |

If you haven't heard by now, one of my all time favorite games is finally getting the DLC we've all been waiting for. And what better way to celebrate that than to talk about it during horror month. What, Binding of Isaac isn't "horror month" enough? Of course it is! It's the epitome of horror month. Well maybe not, but it still fits. Anyway, let's talk about this. A lot of people know very well that I hold anything Binding of Isaac on a high pedestal, and I assume you know it's for good reason. Hell, it's still one of the best games that has come out in quite a long time, and although I haven't really put as much time into it lately as I would like, I still consider it one of the best games i've had the pleasure of playing. That's mostly due to the fact that I just need to be in a certain mood for it now, when before, I could just play it whenever I felt like, mostly because it still felt new and it still does feel new, it's just one of those games I have to really focus on, and sometimes I just don't feel like focusing too much. But the Afterbirth DLC update is going to add so much more content that will make the game feel new and wonderful as it once was at it's initial release. The developers have been giving us updates on a semi regular to regular/daily basis as to what we can expect from this update, and the fact is, it's going to be amazing. This game series in general has never skipped any steps or done anything wrong. Hell, I don't even think i've really ever been disappointed with this series. It's been fun and it continues to be that way. The different synergies you can do, the different ways to win, it's all a lot of fun. This update is going to be bringing even more of that. More synergies with items that desperately need them, new items to find and discover, and different map / level types. It's going to feel like a whole new game while still maintaining the greatness of what makes it great. I've gone ahead and pulled some images from Steam to give you an idea of what to expect, and if this doesn't get you pumped up, I really don't know what will. Also, it's $6.66 on Steam right now and it's being released on October 30th. Whoever is doing the marketing for this game is doing a perfect job. GET HYPED!!! |

I've been reading some reviews for SOMA today, because I've been excited about it for a while, and one review really caught my eye. It basically read "the creators of Amnesia are back, and better than ever. They've gone back to what they're good at, and it works really well." So this has something on my mind not even related to SOMA, but instead...the possibility of a sequel to one of the best horror games ever made. Amnesia: The Dark Descent, if you don't know, is easily one of the finest crafted survival horror games ever made. I may be exaggerating that a bit, but I like the game a lot. Everything from the gameplay to the jump scares are all fantastic. Lots of running around and fearing for your life as if it was you in the game is also a great feeling. Back when this game was released, it was evident that the developers knew what they were doing. Unfortunately, they seemed to sort of lose a bit of credibility when the indirect sequel was created. I'm not really sure why that was since I've played the game, and I think it's great. It's no Dark Descent, but it wasn't meant to be. I think people were just really expecting a direct sequel to a great game, and were left disappointed. But hey, there's no such thing as being "too late" when it comes to making games. Anyway, let me get to my point. According to that review that I mentioned earlier, SOMA apparently showcases the best qualities of Frictional Games, which if you think about it, is a pretty good push for them to push out a sequel to one of their best games. I've yet to play SOMA for myself, but I do own it and am currently in the process of installing it, so I don't know how accurate that review is. The game seems to be getting good reviews, so this could be enough for the developers to realize that maybe they just need to get off their asses and make a sequel for The Dark Descent. I don't even know what to expect if a sequel for The Dark Descent was made, but it would be really interesting to see what they'd do with the game with what they've learned over the years. I'd imagine there'd be really creative ways to scare the **** out of you. Keep in mind, this is all speculation. Frictional Games doesn't even need to make a sequel for The Dark Descent as the game is fantastic on it's own. It's just fun to think of the possibility since there's so much they could do to make the game fantastic. Hell, they could even team up with the team of Outlast and make the scariest game ever made. Oh god, that'd be so deliciously terrifying. |
