31 days of halloween

September is nearing the half over mark, and a lot of people have begun to start considering their plans and costumes for Halloween. Being one of my favorite days of the year, I have decided to create a list of bands/songs/albums that fit perfectly with the festivities. Each day I will showcase a new little treat. I'm going to do my best to span a wide variety of music so that there will be something for everyone, whether you plan to go to a huge rager or sit alone in your room with the lights off and stew.

Day One- Inkubus Sukkubus

Inkubus Sukkubus are a pagan darkwave band that has been around since 1989, and even in their most recent albums, the production still sounds like it was made in the late eighties. The instrumentation paired with the lower-fi production brings forth a perfectly autumnal type sound. This alone would be enough to play them frequently as the leaves turn yellow and brown and fall from the trees, but the cherry on top of all of this is their lyrical themes. Almost all of their lyrics pertain to their neo-pagan/wicca faith, and those that do not touch up on sex, fae, demons, and vampires. Oh boy do they love their vampires, in fact all of their best songs are based on vampirism. Although a lot of their songs sound kind of samey, they have a good formula and their overall sound is as sexy as a vampire and a witch making sweet lesbian love in the middle of an open field. Most appropriate for big college halloween parties complete with smoke machines and blacklights, especially if the ladies are donning skimpy costumes.

Day Two-Chelsea Wolfe

Whereas Inkubus Sukkubus' lyrical content was often touching on witchcraft and otherworldy spirits, this doom folk artist's music is much more evocative of those images to me. Everything she does is soaked in darkness and a whole lot of reverb. Droning riffs and pounding drums with a distant faraway voice echoing into the forefront, the entire aesthetic sounds like a group of witches opening a portal to another world while their dark goddess speaks in riddles and dark secrets. Perfect for seances, dark communion and ritual sacrifice.

Last few days have been crazy, so prepare for a double whammy!

Day Three- Tom Waits

Tom Waits is very well known on this (and every) music forum for good reason. Mixing Jazz, Polka, Blues, a healthy taste for pop ballads, and wild host of other genres together, he is known as a musical mad scientist in the music community. It would be very easy for me to just this slot to his darkest albums- Bone Machine and Blood Money, for a Halloween playlist, but that would be selling him short. On a bunch of his albums you'll find songs about murder, paranoia, death, and the much darker side of the impoverished, I go as far as to say his songs that touch on these subjects are his best works. Best music for locking your door, blocking with a chair, and turning all of the lights off. A lot of weird folk come out on Halloween...

Day Four- Akira Yamaoka

Akira Yamaoka was the long time composer for the video game series, Silent Hill, and, quite frankly, half the reason the games were freaky. Using a little bit of portishead style trip-hop, noise, and a tinge of post rock and industrial, his music is that of empty streets, thick fogs, and the unexplainable horrors waiting within them. Perfect for checking out that old abandoned factory where three people have gone missing, those stories everyone keep telling can't be real, right?

Sorry about the delay, life has a way of taking weird turns for me. I know it's well past Halloween, but I'm going to finish what I started here.

Day Five- Psyclon Nine- We The Fallen

Psyclon Nine started off as a run off the mill EBM/'Aggrotech' (What a stupid name for a subgenre) band. Nothing terribly innovative or groundbreaking, but still really good in its own right, utilizing shorter song lengths than a lot of their contemporaries to good effect, giving themselves a bit more of a sense of immediacy. As they released more albums, a metal influence was becoming more and more apparent, though they seemed to keep their 'metal' songs and their ebm ones seperate. Their most recent album, We The Fallen, is a twisted hybrid of the two genres, ranging from the cacophanic to the unsettling and brooding, the appropriate soundtrack to an S&M dungeon.

Day Six- Wednesday 13

Taking influences from equal parts glam rock, Alice Cooper, and The Misfits (which may or may not make an appearance later in this list), Wednesday 13's music (including every project he's been in) is cheesy, rude, and fun. From tales of necrophilia, Vincent Price, to open love letters of profane words, this guy has all the fun you need to liven up a party, or at least make the time pass by quicker while you're giving candy to kids hungover from the night before.

Day Seven-Sui Generis Umbra

This stuff isn't for the faint of heart. Very few things I have heard in my (limited) exploration of music labelled as 'experimental' have resonated with me and affected me emotionally as much as this group has. eLL's vocals consist usually of shrieking, growling, and chants behind a wall of reverb and noisy electronic music, courtesy of producer Maciek. In an interview she has said that she believes that she channels demons and evil spirits while she performs. I'm inclined to agree. If you want something that will scare the pants off you, look no further.
