Album title: World Eater Artist: Blanck Mass Genre: IDM/Techno/Dark Ambient Nationality: English Release date: March 3 Position in Discography: Third Fear Factor: Moderate Familiar with this artist? No Familiar with the genre or subgenre? No Average RYM Score: 3.48 Some/most of you will know the band Fuck Buttons; I don't. But this guy is apparently one of their founders – Benjamin John Power? Anyway, is it impressive stuff! Starts off quite ambient and gentle, then builds up to a powerful hammering driving electronic heartbeat that just really hits the spot. I really like the way everything flows organically together, so not only are you never sure which track you're listening to, but it really doesn't matter. There's nothing on this I don't like. It's far from wallpaper music as some instrumental music can be; this is music that demands to be listened to. You just can't ignore it. A thrill ride and sheer quality from start to finish. Superb. Check out more from this artist? Oh **** yes. And Fuck Buttons too, if they're like this. Check out more from this genre or subgenre? Yes Expectation Index: 10

Album title: Emerald Island Artist: Caro Emerald Genre: Exotica Nationality: Dutch Release date: March 3 Position in Discography: Third overall; first EP Fear Factor: High Familiar with this artist? No Familiar with the genre or subgenre? Was not even aware it existed Average RYM Score: 3.50 What the flipping flip is exotica, as a musical genre? To Wiki, post haste! Oh, I see: a sanitised, fantasy version of island music. Caribbean beats for white folks. Hmm. Sounds less than promising. Well this is only an EP so we'll see. Looks like she has Guy Chambers working on her material, he of Robbie Williams fame. Take that as you will. Yea, kinda sounds like maybe the stuff you'd hear play in bars in the fifties whose owners thought they were exotic (hence the genre tag, I suppose) or maybe on cruise ships. There's an attempt to reggae the third song up, but it's clearly white man's reggae and just laughable. Not sure why a Dutch woman is trying to recreate the fantasy music of the islands, but there you go. Pretty sanitised and annoying, to be honest. “Exotic Flu” is particularly so, just a few notes repeated on a piano. Sigh. And back to the reggae we go. Mon. Where's the lifebuoy? Let me off this ship! I'll take me chances with the sharks. Check out more from this artist? Not while there's breath in my body Check out more from this genre or subgenre? Not while there's, you know... Expectation Index: 0

Thanks a lot, March! There I was, happily humming along with two good albums in the bag. Slight blip with Caro Emerald and then BAM! You hit me with Deadmau5 AND Ed ****ing Sheeran! Way to bring me back down to earth with a bang!

Album title: stuff i used to do Artist: Deadmau5 Genre: Electronic/Progressive House/Breakbeat/IDM Nationality: Canadian Release date: March 3 Position in Discography: Fifteenth Fear Factor: High Familiar with this artist? Heard one album, didn't like it Familiar with the genre or subgenre? No Average RYM Score: N/A Pretty much as I expected. The simple melody behind “Screen Door” is appealing, but the mechanised voice recording that accompanies it is annoying. The thing about this is that the music is, generally, all right, but I'm not one of those who enjoys the use of recorded voices, effects, sounds etc run alongside or on top of the music, and so that leaves little for me here. That said, the current track I'm listening to, which is ten minutes long (“HaxPigMeow”) is pretty good. The next one's good too. See, when he sticks to the music I can take this, but while I can listen to it, I won't remember it, and compared to Blanck Mass previously, this is much lower grade in my opinion. It's made me hate Deadmau5 a little less, but I still don't like him. Check out more from this artist? Unlikely Check out more from this genre or subgenre? Yes Expectation Index: 4
