Big time. Surprised this track wasn't mentioned. Highlight of the album for me.

I was actually gonna mention that, since it's one of the best songs on that album. But seeing as TH is just giving these a 'once-over', I figured I'd cut him some slack since it's not likely one can pick up on all of the nuances of a piece on the first listen.

I want to make TH listen to all my little indie classics.

Title: Memento
Artiste: cloudcover
Genre: Rock/Indie

Love
1. The acoustic guitar on the opener
2. The super-funny twenties piano song that follows it; Neil Hannon would be proud!
3. Vocal harmonies on “Small talk”
4. The chamber choir
5. Guitar solo on “Ignite”
6. Bassline on “Let the child be” as well as the horns and the digital piano
7. Doesn't that closing piano line on “Case of the mind” resurface later on Frownland?

Hate
1. Some of the singing is a little weak, a bit strained. Not really a “Hate”, but I thought I should have something in here, and it's hard to find anything to bitch about really.

End result: Not of course as good as Frownland (but then, it never was going to be, was it?) but still a very worthy effort and a good precursor to that album.

So, Love or Hate? Love, certainly.

Chances of a full review: 9/10

Yeah, pretty much it. This format allows me to do other things (was writing up my "Judge Dredd" episodes as I listened) but does have the drawback of meaning I'm not totally concentrating on the album. Given a few more listens maybe I'd like it more. But this is really just, as you say, a quick once-over. I do however know when something clicks, as I said with "Broken hearts"...

hell yeah! I knew you'd like it. And yeah we got better in every aspect of songwriting and production between that album and Frownland. I'm extremely interested now to hear your thoughts on the middle album which is by far the weirdest, but we'll save that for another time down the road

Yep, I gave it a quick listen too, and it does have some catchy numbers. Not sure where the similarities between the MB member here and the title of your album lie, but I'll have to give Frownland a listen now as well.

well both the album and the username were taken from the first track on Trout Mask Replica by Captain Beefheart, but I picked it because it sounded cool and described the album well whereas Frown picked it because he's a Beefheart fanboy :P

and Frownland (the album) is waaaay better, you wont be disappointed if you enjoyed Memento

Somewhere in the wee corners of my Busch addled brain, I knew this. I appreciate the slap on the noggin.

I definitely recommend Frownland (the album, not the member, though he's cool too!) --- I was blown away by it, and you know me, I'm hard to please at the best of times.
