As I said, I'm going to be deciding whether or not to accept recs, and if I think you're just giving me something in order to annoy me rather than genuinely interested in what I think of it, I'll decline it. Don't push me. From now on, I'm going to go track-by-track, just very briefly saying if I love or hate it, and why. I do this because I've noticed it can be a little confusing perhaps to follow my reasoning when, say, all the "Love" side says this track is great etc then the "Hate" says I'm bored, and you don't know how that feeling is progressing through the album. It will give more of a moment-by-moment development of how I feel about it. Maybe. I'll try it anyway, see how it goes.

Title: Tin drum Artiste: Japan Genre: Pop/New Wave Love I've always liked “Ghosts”. Very minimalistic and quite spooky (appropriately); something of a masterpiece for the time. “Canton” is also good. Very good in fact. Nice instrumental. Hate Pretty generic new-wave eighties stuff so far; not as heavily reliant on synth as some of their stablemates, but still nothing too impressive to me. Have never been a fan of David Sylvian's voice. End result: I know Japan from back in my youth, when I reviled anything that was “pop” or at least not rock. Have I changed my mind? Not really: I can see some decent songs here but generally it's the kind of new-wave pop stuff I never cared for. So, Love or Hate? Hate really Chances of a full review: 2/10

I heard you made a thread where you reviewed every Slayer record. I'd love to read it, can't find it though.

Title: Clear spot Artiste: Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band Genre: Fuck knows! Love 1. Decent blues track, no weirdness. When this guy sings he can, ya know, sing. 2. Same, with a decent bit of humour in it 3. Nice soul feel to this 4. Blues this time, and I hear where Waits began to think “Fuck! I need to get on to this shit!” Love the harmonica. 5. This is fucking beautiful. Real laidback westcoast feel to it. Superb. 6. Faster blues/soul hybrid, Waits vocal again. Not mad about it but not bad. 7. Decent track, nothing wrong with it. Not great but not bad. More harmonica. Cool. 8. Another ok track, like the background vocals 9. Nice uptempo blues track with, yes, more harmonica 10. Kind of almost a ballad. Like it. The hoarse voice makes it. Hate 11. Kind of an example (the first on this album, in fairness) of the silly side of Beefheart I don't like. Not bad though: eleven tracks of twelve before I find something I don't like! 12. And the last is about the same. Still, as I say, not a bad ratio. End result: Much more “standard” rock than I had expected, no stupid poetry, effects or crazy screams, and overall a much better album than I had been anticipating. So, Love or Hate? It has to be Love, oddly. Chances of a full review: 2/10

I knew I could get you to like Beefheart. I thought Safe As Milk would do it but that was too out there for you. You might like The Spotlight Kid, which is very much in the same style as Clear Spot. There's also Bluejeans & Moonbeams and Unconditionally Guaranteed, both of which are pretty much abhorred by the Beefheart community but might be easy enough for you to swallow.
And if you call Beefheart's lyrics stupid again I'll cut ye.
