Title: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly OST
Artiste: Ennio Morricone
Genre: Soundtrack/Western
Familiarity: Who hasn't seen this film or at least knows the title track? Haven't heard much of the rest of it though.
Recommended by: Deadchannel

Expectations: I kind of expect to like it. I have seen the movie, but I don't recall paying too much attention to the music. I don't recall hating it though.

1. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, main title: Of course I know this: who doesn't? Those slow pounding drums, that whistle, the wah-wah-wah, the whole thing. Great stuff. That jangly guitar. Ennio is a god.
2. Sundown: Lovely bit of soft spanish guitar with strings or synth backing.
3. The strong: Very dramatic and of course cinematic feel to this. Gets the real western movie theme going with horns and strings. Very moving.
4. The desert: This is a really nice atmospheric ambient piece, does evoke the barrenness of the desert certainly. Great strings work, and the rippling piano works really well.
5. The carriage of the spirits: Short piece with some nice trumpet and choral vocals.
6. Marcia: ah, harmonica! The whistling is a little “seven-dwarves” if I'm honest. Not mad about this one.
7. The story of a soldier: A sung piece? Bit twee. Not for me thanks.
8. Marcia without hope: This is nicer. Slow, doomy in its way, kind of like a funeral march I guess. Just hummed, not sung.
9. The death of a soldier: Isn't this just basically the same tune? Well, with an extra trumpet section, but essentially the same.
10. The ecstasy of gold: That fast rolling piano is back, along with some horn and the bells which we haven't really heard up to now. I like this. Gets very heated and dramatic. Probably the best track bar the title for me.
11. The trio (Main title): It's a bit of a low-key ending, and anyway, when I watched the movie it ended with the same title?

End result: In case you're wondering DC, I checked the Wiki entry and it only had 11 tracks. I came across other versions that had up to 21 tracks, but I really wasn't in the mood to listen to that amount of music and, given what I heard, I feel a lot of it may have been the same. I'd have to say, great film though it is, this is not really what I would call a great soundtrack. It's good, but not something I'd be listening to again.

So, Love or Hate? Still, it's Ennio so it would be churlish to give it anything less than a Love.

Morricone is one of those composers who can make me visualize the film when I'm listening to it. Very few composers are capable of that, even John Williams doesn't do that for me (beside for the obvious Sith and Jaws themes, but I would put that more to their prominence in culture than his compositional talents).

I find John Barry can also do that. I love the soundtrack to Dances With Wolves.

I work with OCD patients on a regular basis. Many of them have vocally stated that they hate when people use the term in such minor situations. The condition WAS being trivialized in this thread. These are just simple facts fellas, you can be defiant *******s in response all you want

At the risk of traumatizing real children out there, quit being such a crybaby.

That's the opposite of what I requested.

You're actively choosing not to listen to an album that you would obviously like since you dug For Now
