Title: Symphony No. 5, Op. 50 FS 97
Artiste: Carl Nielsen
Genre: Classical
Familiarity: Zero
Recommended by: Pet_Sounds

Expectations: I have a lot of time for classical, so unless it's really boring chamber music or something I can't relax and enjoy, I'd say I'm there.

1. First movement: Tempo giusto – Adagio non troppo: Obviously there's going to be a fair lot written here, as there are only technically two tracks to discuss. Lovely opening violins, reminds me of “Morning” by Grieg, then a slightly more uptempo bit gives way to violins and cellos maybe, a more rising melody, bit stronger. Now the drums are coming in and it's sounding sort of old-Hollywood-movie-about-Rome or something like that. Very powerful. I read it's something to do with a battle between the forces of good and evil, so yeah, I can hear that. I'm not going to go into every aspect of each movement, as I'd be here a lot longer than I intend to be if I did that, but this is great stuff. The Adagio non troppo section is gorgeous and very moving. Great fusilade of percussion in the final minutes.
2. Second movement: Allego – Presto- Andante un poco tranquillo – Allegro: Starts off much more powerfully, sort of almost like those old Western movies? The Presto part is very playful, as you would expect, violins and bassoons frolicking about with piccolos and flutes, then it gets a bit more forceful as the drums pound in, then it all slows down to some beautiful violin and viola for Andante un poco tranquillo then there's a big stirring finish.

End result: I really like classical music, and there are few pieces I would say I don't enjoy. This was new to me, but certainly something I got a lot of enjoyment out of.

So, Love or Hate? Another Love.

Title: Von
Artiste: Yoko Kanno feat. Arnor Dan
Genre: Soundtrack
Taken from: Terror in Resonance OST
Familiarity: Zero
Suggested by: Ilistentoeverything

Expectations: Again, not an idea. I guess if you're into videogames or Japanese movies you would know her work, but I don't. Nevertheless, after scoring a direct hit on his first shot, I'm excited to see what ilistentoeverything has for me next.

Beautiful soft piano opening, then the vocal is soft, slightly operatic, with another vocal singing three words: “Winter, summer, converging” which merges really well with the main vocal. Lovely cello now, a real stark fragile beauty about this piece. Sweet descending scale on the violin. I think there's a third voice joining now, as the music becomes a little discordant towards the end, almost all vocals falling away now bar the three-word one as violins take over for the final minute. Gorgeous.

Conclusion: Two out of two so far! Another top rated piece.

So, Love or Hate? And another True Love.

Possibility of looking into the album: 90%

Expectations: It's hip-hop and it's Bandcamp. I can't help but feel I won't be getting into this, but we'll see.

1. Rabblerouse: Good melody, decent rap, interesting wordplay. Synthy organ is cool at the end
2. Souvenir: Slide guitar? Cool. Second song in which he's mentioned mythology. The stop/start style of the music oddly enough doesn't annoy me, which it normally would.
3. Zen scientist: Nice slow laidback one here; lot of soul in this one
4. Re: animist: Interesting warped piano here; not sure if I like it though.
5. An encyclopaedia: Nice slow accompaniment, like his use of the encyclopaedia in the title. Sort of horns going on and off, bit like a slow siren or something.
6. Going no place: Dark vocal here is pretty cool. Reference to Renegade is neat. The TV show that is.
7. True nen: Harmonica? What is true nen anyway?
8. Napping under the echo tree: This has a really nice relaxing melody to it; the echoing drums are lovely and if that's violin (which it probably isn't) I dig it too.
9. @yomilo: It's alright but I'm not mad about this one.
10. Song about a raygunn (An ode to Driver): Very motown/soul with a much faster rap. But yeah I like this one.

End result: For a rapper/hip-hop artist this guy is pretty damn good and didn't annoy me as most of the ones I have listened to to date did. Liked the music and I like his style. Kind of pays his dues back to soul and blues.

So, Love or Hate? Oddly enough, this is another Love, which I had not expected.
I thought that Milo's sort of detached, chill delivery might be more palatable to you than most rap, but damn.

Title: Duvet
Artiste: Boa
Genre: Indie
Taken from: Twilight
Familiarity: Zero
Suggested by: Ilistentoeverything

Expectations: Don't know, but a point to bear in mind for everyone: if your rec is a little obscure, or could be confused with a similar-sounding artist, PLEASE point this out. I have just spent time trawling through the discography of the Korean pop artist Boa, only to find that this is an English band. There was no way to know, and given that his last rec was a Japanese artiste I thought I was on the right track. That's time wasted I don't have. So please, make it a little easier for me, huh? I don't want to expire searching the web for obscure bands or artistes you guys have picked for me.

Nice female vocal anyway, with a jangly sort of guitar, nice melody. Pleasant song, but nothing terribly that special I feel.

Conclusion: Yeah it's okay but I'm kind of tempered by the annoyance at how much I had to search for this, to find it's just a pretty generic indie song in the end. Help me out, guys. I can't spend hours looking for your goddamn recs!

So, Love or Hate? Kind of meh, but I'll give it a Like. Barely.

Title: Exterminating Angel
Artiste: Alec K. Redfearn and the Seizures
Genre: Folk/Rock
Familiarity: Zero
Recommended by: Grindy

Expectations: Absolutely none. I have no idea what this will be like.

1. Voice to skull: Interesting. Not sure whether good or bad interesting.
2. Isle of swine: Like the accordion, very ethnic. Not so gone on the rest of it though.
3. Rise: More accordion, faster with some good percussion and then it kicks into a kind of rock/rockabilly thing. Hmm. Yeah this one is quite good, almost metal in a way.
4. Elzebet: This is great. Rockin' instrumental with some great guitar and accordion, possibly mellotron too. Crap! Not an instrumental. Well, still great.
5. The picture: Interesting opening on dobro? Banjo? Boogie with a feel of Waits circa Rain Dogs. Excellent guitar solo.
6. Gesualdo: Banjo solo? Glockenspiel; another Waitsy style song.
7. The hole: This is uptempo with a real sense of folk and fun about it. Great, powerful ending.
8. Maria: Good powerful closer, builds up nicely.

End result: It was a good album but I wasn't blown away. I'm unsure if I'd be listening to any more of his material, but not bad.

So, Love or Hate? This can only really be a Like.
