I think Black Ice is incredible. It got a lot of flack for some reason, but it was great from front to back.

#91: Tarja (Vocalist / solo)

  • With Nightwish, one of the greatest bands with a female vocalist. Without Nightwish, one of the most boring and carried on vocalists.
  • Just doesn't sound right without the addition of Emppu on guitars. It brought a unique and powerful experience to the rest of the group.
  • She did a collab on her What Lies Beneath with Joe Satriani called Falling Awake.
...Joe Satriani was the only reason I listened to the album to that point.
  • Honestly, she should try to find another band she can sing for. She does it naturally and great. I would pay to see her perform if that were the case.
  • I feel like i'm listening to opera when I listen to her solo work. I'm not dissing on opera, but Tarja is not an opera singer.

Falling Awake (with Joe Satriani)

I've added a list to the first post of this thread with the artists I've currently done.

#90: Madonna

  • Listened to her a lot in high school, I remember scrolling through my iPod and seeing Bedtime Stories on the list. Unfortunately, it wasn't a very frequent listen then, but it was still fun to listen to.
  • Recently acquired her self titled "Madonna" on vinyl. Instantly fell in love with her again after hearing that album.
  • I remember dancing in a parade a few years back up in Seattle and Madonna was heard through the speakers. I was in a bit of shock for about a couple seconds until I realized that it was her playing. Such a fun experience.
  • I'm not always so fond of female vocalist, for whatever reason, but she tends to be an exception whenever the topic comes up. I have nothing against women singing, it's just not something I listen to often enough.

Some songs from her self titled debut:

If the women is singing alone, I just can't stomach it.

However, if a female singer is the frontman of the group, I tend to be more lenient. Especially with groups like Abba, Nightwish, and Arch Enemy.

pretty much the same for me, but it also depends on what kind of band, really

i love The New Pornographers when Neko sings, and that's mostly due to the power-pop

I suppose we could throw The Carpenters into the equation as well. Karen has got some serious pipes.

^^yeah, I love the Carpenters

that's just mostly due to the structure of the songs, they sound like pop, but use complex jazz chords
