Good to hear you liked it. I think I listened to that album about 50 times in the week I downloaded it - it's something very weird about the better albums boasting David Sylvian's involvement that have a seriously addictive quality about them. Can see what you mean about the whole smooth, gloomy quality of the whole thing - very eerie, ethereal and all that, and fantastic night-time listening. And yet Japan are in Blender's 50 Worst Bands Of All Time list! Bloody ridiculous.

I honestly didn't realize how cheesy the band and album name were until I read your review and I must admit I lol'd at the realization. I also have the stars are dead now if you ever want to check it out. |

Sorry it's a bit late, but here's what Anticipation sent my way...
Flaviola e o Bando do Sol - Flaviola e o Bando do Sol A 1974, fairly short record of psychedelic folk straight from Brazil. Naturally then, the lyrics aren't really something I can make a very interesting comment on. I'd be lying if I said I knew a thing about this band - the fact that the write-up on their LastFM page is in Portuguese should give you some idea of how obscure this stuff is. Basically, it's something I'd never have had a chance of coming across before I did via this thread. And that's why I keep bothering with this thread as, a lot like going onto some random blog and picking out albums by artists that you've never heard a peep in your life, it's a gamble in a music-hoarding sense, and one that's paid off for me again. Absolutely lovely album this. As I've said before in a few places around here, the thing that makes vocal world music (for want of a better phrase) break through the language barrier is when the rest of the music leaves its mark. It's something that the very best albums from around the world manage to do, and that's what's achieved here. The kind of harsh-sounding, more gritty opening is a bit misleading as an album opener, as the rest of it focuses musically on some simply spellbinding sonic textures conjured by some fantastic work on the acoustic guitars (kind of treading a fine line between rock and classical guitar styles here), and how they're backed up and given a more psychedelic edge by the heavy use of flutes and woodwind throughout the album. Vocals are used very sparsely but, as and when they're employed, they just melt into the sonic picture. Remarkable album this. It's sunk in a bit since I first listened to it, but it's something that's quality unravels with repeated listenings. Anyway, thanks Anticipations - nice one |

How we all doing with this trade then? I'll confess I'm not doing so well as I'm yet to upload any albums myself, so I'll get on that this evening after I've got plenty of work done.
In case anyone's forgotten, the next trade will be themed (haven't decided as what though, so suggestions are welcome), and the target for getting it started is this Sunday. |

I don't think I'll be able to be in the next trade, as I still haven't reviewed Rickenbacker's album from the last trade, and I still haven't sent abdullah the album for this week's trade. :/
I'll try to do both these things as soon as possible, I just have a lot of work for Uni.

Got sent this by Bulldog-
Lutan Fyah - Time and Place A cool record that surprised me a bit with it's soulfulness, Lutan Fyah lyrically flows like a river here on the banks of some nice beats throughout its many tracks, touching upon a variety of subject matter all the while. Lots of horns, but he sometimes shifts gears into jazzier territory or back to the roots completely (such as Love Is The Only Absolute) and then goes from being 'merely cool' to 'hellyeahz awesome!'. In short, I like this a lot, and feel inclined to get more into Fyah's discography in general. Thanks Bull!

Great to hear you liked them as much as you did. That Junkie XL album's probably my favourite of his, while Lutan Fyah's easily my favourite modern reggae geezer. If either of you are up for listening to the other options I sent you, be my guest They're only really there to give you a bit of choice in the first place though.
