I'm going to try and have one of mine up by tonight as well. I'll have to pass on next week's trade though, I've got a big paper due next week plus some other loose ends to tie up schoolwise.

I'm in for the next one
Duga sent me Velvet Acid Christ - Fun with Knives This album was a very interesting listen. The music was very fast and heavy yet it managed to not be the kind of music you would want to get up and dance to unless you dropped a tab. While every song had beats full of energy the lyrics, quotes from movies, and background melodies were pretty dark which created a really interesting atmosphere. I was torn between bobbing my head and solemnly staring at my laptop screen for a while though I ended up going with the former. I enjoyed the album and odds are one day I'll definitely listen to it again but it was way to heavy to make it into my regular rotation (I'm more of a Hot Chip guy when it comes to electronic music). If you're into heavy electronic music I'd definitely recommend this album. Thanks Duga. |

I'm glad to hear you enjoyed it enough to possibly give it another listen sometime. I was a bit nervous recommending that album as I know it really isn't for everyone. I find VAC's music to be quite interesting, though. Although, I have to warn against tripping to this music...my brother and I tried it out while shrooming and the result wasn't so fun. We ended up switching to Mogwai, which was truly epic...but that is another story. VAC has also released a ton of music, a lot of it being hit or miss...but there are around 4 albums of his that I find to be incredibly original and worth checking out. I will get the review for your album up soon!

Anticipation sent me Following the Holy Moon Goddess by The Summer We Went West, who disbanded in 2007 after releasing this. Basically this album at its core is indie, with what I'd describe as emo vocals (sort of similar to American Football). However, this album really cannot be pigeonholed into a specific genre. One moment you'll be listening to swirling guitars and loud, obnoxious vocals, then the band will slow it down and take it easy with some minimalist, chilled out instrumental sections. Tracks 6-8 take a completely different direction, as they're basically spoken word poetry over some drums and electronic beats. From glancing at other reviews the stand-out track for most people is apparently Jackson Hole, Wy. I think I preferred Gin, the track directly after, and Aussie Shampoo Massacre was also solid. I also really enjoyed the above-mentioned tracks 6-8, it was almost like listening to a completely different album but somehow it worked. Overall though I couldn't really get into it, I think mainly due to the vocals, which were kind of whiny and a little too-all-over-the-place for me. The one real positive I liked was that it definitely never got monotonous, the band was definitely unafraid to mix it up from track to track. Dunno if I'd listen to it again as it's not really my cup of tea, but it was an interesting 40 minutes for sure.

GotJuice was kind enough to send me...
Trespassers William - Different Stars And I absolutely loved it. For an idea of what kind of music lies behind the name, a good look at the above album art basically gives you the perfect glimpse of the music therein. Bleak, atmospheric and very slow, female-fronted dream pop. It sounds like a more blue version of the handful of early Everything But the Girl songs I've heard, with a few more synthesized atmospherics and piano backings thrown into the mix. Basically, it fits snugly into the melancholy theme for the trade. For however much it does though, there is a very strange kind of warmth to the whole thing. It's hard to put my finger on where it comes from - probably has a little to do with the gorgeous vocals and lovely melodies throughout. It's uncanny how it comes around and really does this album a whole lot of favours in my eyes. Fantastic stuff then, and something I can really see getting better with each new listen. I can't really pick out favourites at the minute as the level of quality throughout the whole length of the album is really that seamless. Anyway, thanks GJ As an aside, if you wanna hear another great album that sounds just like this one (although with a lot more distortion and echo on the guitars and vocals), you should definitely hunt down Emmylou Harris' Wrecking Ball, one of my all-time favs. If you need a link, you know who to call! I'll give the album I got off of Anticipation very soon too. The next (unthemed) trade will begin on Wednesday at the very latest (ideally a little sooner though - depends how busy I am), so it's not too late to sign up for this one if you're still mulling it over. |

Glad you enjoyed it For me, my easy favorite is the cover of Ride's Vapour Trail...I think it may just be the best cover of any song I've ever heard. I really can't decide honestly whether I prefer Ride or TW's version, and that's saying something because the original is also one of my favorite songs of all time.
