The Beginner's Guide to.. Tech Trance

When the commercial era of trance began to fade, artists became more original and began to do different things. It was at this time when Tech Trance came about. In fact it came in at 2 different angles: from Hard Trance producers who didn't want to produce Hardstyle and Trance producers who were trying something new. Tech Trance gets its name from "techno" and as such, is an influence. Some are more Trancey and some have more of a Techno tinge, it all depends on the artist and how saucy they are feeling. It was at this time when Trance artists like Mike Koglin would play alongside Hard Trance legends such as Scot Project. There were hardly any artists who would produce ALL Tech Trance but if one did, it was usually a former Hard Trance producer. Of course this wasn't always the case. Nowadays it is still being made but is also influenced by Electro and House. Former Hard Trance producers are also, strangely, going from Tech Trance to Progressive Tech House. Huge names like Kamui and A.S.Y.S. (Frank Ellrich) are good examples.

Early:
Yves Deruyter & Marcel Woods pres. Frequence - Frequence [2003]
Hennes & Cold - Ssshh! [2002]
Tiesto - Traffic [2003]

Peak:
Kamui - Ghosts [2004]
Richard Durand - Make Me Scream [2005]
Sander van Doorn - Back By Any Demand [2005]
Joop - Another World [2005]

Late:
Cosmic Gate - Should Have Known (Wippenberg Remix) [2006]
Stoneface & Terminal - Endorphine [2007]
Dr. Willis & Scott Alert - Go Away (Kamui Remix) [2007]

Nowadays:
M6 - Fade 2 Black (W&W Remix) [2008]
Robert Gitlemann - Rockless (Jan Oostdyk Remix) [2009]
Kidd Kaos vs. Brian Eddie - Synchronization [2009]

Tangerine Dream

Tangerine Dream are a band still going strong after over 30 years having released over 100 albums in their time. Many of these are film soundtracks and live recordings and admittedly many are of varying quality. However the band (along with Kraftwerk) are one of the most important within the Electronic field. Having begun within the Krautrock scene, TD have become as important to the genre as Kraftwerk but without half of the kudos that they deserve, indeed many synthesisers still used today were created by constant band member Edgar Froese who didn't want to lay claim to the invention of them and instead concentrate on the music.

This intro is split into two parts with the first comp concentrating on their early output which is atypical of the Krautrock sound of the 70's meaning that it was very ambient without structure or form. The second comp sees TD as one of the few bands that grew out of the scene and become a perfect example of what is now termed as New Age Ambient Electronica and if truth be told, a lot of their output in the 90's onwards is standard Electronica with no discerning features.

However, TD remain one of my favourite bands to chillout to and I hope you may like them too!

1969-1979

1. Bent Cold Sidewalk (a very rare track in that it has vocals)
2. Cloudburst Flight
3. Fauni Gena
4. Fly and Collsion of Comas Sola
5. White Clouds
6. Coldwater Canyon
7. Movements Of A Visionary
8. Creation
9. Invisible Limits

Some of the tracks may have a different running order depending on your media player but all are tagged correctly and are MP3 format.

I downloaded the first Compilation for now (1969-1979), and just finished my first listen to it. Great music, I think I might buy some full albums soon. All tracks were epic.
Looking forward to the second compilation, to discover the New Age Ambient Electronica. Tho I guess I'll wait a little before downloading it, cause the first took me a full 4 hours to download (slow connection today).
