The artists that include building prog normally include the Beatles, Beach Boys, Frank Zappa, Pink Floyd and Moody Blues to name just a few. I've named just a few of the well known artists here but anybody into 1960s psychedelia could pinpoint dozens of other examples.

actually the earliest prog album could well be Beach Boys' "Little Deuce Coupe" cos it's a concept album about cars and recurring song cycles - driving around is fun and attracts girls if your car is a pen!s-substitute

Also, art rock is progressive rock as far as I am concerned...
There's not really any doubt that progressive rock moved away from the Willie Dixon-esque lyrics and incorporated more Dylan-esque lyrics. I'd say Dylan had an influence on prog rock, he certainly progressed the music. But I don't expect anyone to listen to me, shall I quote Zappa on Dylan again?

I think progressive rock focuses more on the music than the lyrics. I've listened to a lot and I mean a LOT of prog bands that have incredible music but the lyrics are meh.

I'm not disagreeing with that, but that doesn't mean they Didnt try to write good, Dylan-esque lyrics. Yes is a band that comes off the top of my head that tried to write some sophisticated lyrics.

There's really no link in the music but prog bands went in the more artistic direction when it came to lyrics and Dylan was the pioneer of those kinds of lyrics. So Dylan definitely had an influence on the lyrical side of prog.

I have no problem agreeing to that. Yes is probably one that would come to mind as well who do pretty well lyrically. I always love the lyrics to Owner of A Lonely Heart. Than again, a lot of the songs on 90125 are pretty fantastic in general.

Sgt. pepper is easily the most creative and ground-breaking

I like plenty of Beatles songs but I don't know that they have a great album. There always seem to be a few tracks that I could live without.

the earliest progressive rock song is a song by the who called "a quick one, while he's away" at least that's what's been documented as the first progressive rock song
now as for the beatles my favorite album by them is "magical mystery tour"

Impossible to choose. Depends on the day/mood.

Rubber Soul for the pure artistry and the departure from their earlier stuff.
But having said that, I love their earlier stuff. So I'd have to toss Meet The Beatles in. And how "It Won't Be Long" did not become a monster hit, I'll never know.
