Vladimir Oidupaa Oiun
There isn't too much information on this man, but from what I can gather... he was a protest songwriter/throat-singer from Tuva who ended up being incarcerated (for about 34 years off and on) due to the Tuvan government's growing fear of his influence. Either way, I'm a tremendous fan of his album, Divine Music from a Jail (1999), which was supposedly composed and/or recorded during his imprisonment. Who really knows, though? The differences between fact and legend are blurred when regarding his life and his music.
Anyways... it's such a unique and emotional album... There really isn't anything quite like it. In fact, his music apparently created a branch of Tuvan throat-singing which was appropriately named "Oidupaa style." Any thoughts? Also... if anyone knows more about this man, then I would love to hear what you have to say. |

By a strange coincidence, Cenotaph has come across an album which is also Frownland´s winning nomination from the latest FAIR club poll:-

^ Yours is an extraordinarily knowledgeable post, rostasi ! I wonder how you know so much about Tuvan singing and Asian accordian styles.
In comparison, I´m a total ignoramus and can´t really tell good throat-singing from bad. From what Cenotaph says about this guy´s incarceration, there is a tragic story behind this album, which made me want to like it. Unfortunately for me, though, the timing is bad. I´ve recently been playing into the ground three albums by Huun Huur Tu,( http://www.musicbanter.com/country-f...n-huur-tu.html ) and feel like I need a rest from Tuvan music for a few months. So, on the basis of what I´ve heard, I´m afraid I´m just going for OK with this album - a vote which has more to do with my mood than with Oiudupaa´s merits as an artist.

Necrobump. I was wondering if anybody had any information about what landed Oidupaa in jail?
Also, I recently figured how to do the Oidupaa style kargyraa.

He's usually presented as having been in jail for being a political dissident, but I've read on several russian forums that it was apparently for murder and statutory rape.
Couldn't find any sources on this though.

Oidupaa deserves to be mourned twice.
I've pretty much heard the same thing as you for his imprisonment. Unfortunately, I'm thinking it's the latter since he was so popular and it's not too unlikely that his fans would invent tales of him being a political prisoner.
