Default The 1975 - The 1975 (2013)

Debut album from the band tipped to bring back Indie Rock into the mainstream. The 1975, released 2nd September 2013, reached number 1 in the official album charts in it's first week of release. The 1975 is a great record with many various songs featuring vocals and guitar from Matt Healy, George Daniel on drums, Lead Guitar from Adam Hann, and bassist Ross Macdonald.

The album leads with an introduction to the 'film' as Matty hopes it can be related to. 'The 1975' is slightly ambient, and hard-hitting vocals brings the short song to life. 9/10

'The City' follows it with an anthem like chorus that the fans love to sing to. 'The City' is a fan favourite having already been released on the fourth EP 'IV'. 9.7/10

'M.O.N.E.Y' steps into unknown territory for the band as Matty sings in an almost poetic, rap-style vocals over an RnB beat - and don't they pull it off. 9.5/10

Next up, the most popular track by The 1975, 'Chocolate'. It hardly needs an introduction. Having already won BBC Radio 1's 'Best Song of the Past 5 Years', and gaining over 5 million views on YouTube, it certainly set up the band to become big. 10/10

The album's lead single is a newly recorded version of 'Sex'. 'Sex' shows off the rock side of 'The 1975' with it's heavy guitar backing and hard-hitting drums. 'Sex' is certainly one of the highlights of the album. 10/10

'Talk!' features strong guitar licks leading the song into action. Matty begins his vocals with the powerful lyric "why d'ya talk so loud?" repeating throughout. 9.6/10

'An Encounter' is an ambient/interlude track which you can tell previews the upcoming tracks. These tracks definatly secure the album becoming 'like a film'. 9/10

'Heart Out' is one of the songs with a big pop influence. The guitar licks and smooth drums allows the song to feel 'chill' and is certainly a song to dance to. 9/10

'Settle Down' again is a pop influenced song and like 'Heart Out', a perfect dance anthem. It has an uptempo beat with fresh feeling guitar riffs. 10/10

One of the slower songs on the album is 'Robbers'. It brings the album back down-to-earth after the two pop songs. 'Robbers' is one of the earliest songs written by the band and lyrically, the song impresses. 9.7/10

The latest single, 'Girls' brings the album back to another dance/pop level. It is certainly a song to sing along to. 'Girls' is released on November 11th and we should expect big things from the song. 9.6/10

'12' is the final interlude track on the album and is a chance to relax after the past few tracks. 9/10

'She Way Out' is a bouncy track with another fast guitar riff to give the song a 'dance' feel. 9.3/10

'Menswear' is a different track on the album. It begins with no vocals and a cool bass line and bass licks. Half way through the song, Matty's vocals come in hard and strong to bring the song to life. 9/10

'Pressure' is one of my favourites on the album with a catchy chorus and fresh guitar riffs. The song is about how the band will stay the same despite the newfound fame. 9.7/10

The last song, 'Is There Somebody Who Can Watch You' is something completely different. Matty is on his own, singing along to his piano. It is a slower, sad song, with Matty asking 'who will take care of his brother while he's on tour all year'. The song certainly hits a sad topic and finishes the album perfectly. 10/10

Overall, 'The 1975' is a great album. I would say album of the year. 10/10

Album reviews take the most effort and most time, yet get the least notice. I wrote a one sentence thread and it got this many views in one day. Maybe it's because the album I reviewed isn't well known or very popular. However I think album reviews should be credited a lot more. Just sayin'

I'd say indie rock has been in the mainstream for the past 25 years or so, at least.

Not album of the year by any means, but a lot better than it had any right to be.

The only album I could think was maybe as good as or better was AM by the Arctic Monkeys, or Bad Blood by Bastille. Just my opinion though. I do think The 1975's was better.

I guess you and I have been listening to different albums. I like the two radio singles but none of the rest sticks in my mind.

They have 4 radio singles. Do you mean Chocolate and Sex? They're the most popular two and the best two probably.

I guess it's just your music taste. Whilst most people would say the album is Indie Rock there are a lot of songs I would say are Indie Pop so if you only really like one genre, then it would be hard to fit the whole album into that one genre.

I'm not sure I understand the point of rating all of the songs out of 10 when every single song gets at least 9/10.
