Default Bullet For My Valentine - Temper Temper

I’m Going to do a review of each song off this individually then a full overall review after, This is so you know what let’s this album down and/or what makes this album brillaint. My Rating system goes like this:

1. Breaking Point
This song is a metal tune, It’s a good opener to the album and it’s solid. There isn’t anything special but it’s good. I don’t think there is enough screaming for the fans in this song. Me personally, Bullet is one of the only bands I like who do some screaming. I feel like their mix of clean and screaming is a trademark for them. There isn’t enough in this song. The solo is good but comes a little unexpectedly with the build up not good enough. Chorus is catchy in perfect Bullet fashion. It sounds like Bullet; so any doubts would be washed away… right?

2. Truth Hurts
So first thing that strikes me is: verse sounds similar to the first song, more screaming and lyrics are not very good. “Truth Hurts like a bag of nails” that’s the chorus. Really? Also, “Truth Hurts” is annoying to my ears, the way it’s sung I don’t enjoy, follow that up with the weird high pitch scream thing? What? They should have taken off the effect. The song is there it’s still better than most of the crap you hear now. But it’s very average.

3. Temper Temper
First single from the Album, so I heard this a couple of times already and I love it. When it came out I thought “Yep, this is Bullet”. Again, not a lot of screaming, which doesn’t bother me but the chorus is catchy and this will be a classic with all the others like Tears Don’t Fall and Scream Aim Fire. The melodic “Feels good when I lose control” is just what expect from Matt Tuck. Great Song.

4. P.O.W
Slower, good, a bit of variety, at least not every song sounds the same. The heavier bit is good to. I get a vibe of those 00s rock tracks from Lostprophets - Rooftops and 30 Seconds to Mars - The Kill which lucky for Bullet is the only songs from those artists I like. Though I do feel like it’s weak when compared to them, which is bad, because 30STM are terrible in my eyes xD

5. Dirty Little Secret
Slower again, and Matt’s vocals sound different to other things. The chorus where he says “Animal” sounds the same as Breaking Point’s Chorus just missing the note on the end. The guitar melody really freshens the song up though. But then has a simple chord progression. This song feels like: I want to like it, but I don’t. I’m just not into it.

6. Leech
I was shown this by my friend/band mate and It is lyrically horrendous, The start of it makes sense “sucking my blood” ok.. then it talks about a party, What? Erm did you get 2 songs mixed up Matt? “Your invitation, it doesn’t exist. So tell me why do you have to crash the party” Please tell me this isn’t serious. One thing makes up for this, The heavy guitar riff after everything. But they should have kept that and made a different song with it because this song is terrible.

Break: Ok, so far, the songs aren’t too bad apart from Leech. They aren’t amazing, and it isn’t classic Bullet. But in defense, you shouldn’t keep with the same thing, or you become Nickelback as one of the comments said on the video. I could go on, but that’s for a different post. They are sounding like Bullet but even for me (not a big fan on screaming) I miss the screaming. I also feel exhausted after the first half, maybe the aggression from the album, or the fact I haven’t had much sleep and I’m doing this for every song on the track.

7. Dead to the World
Another slower and sadder one, I enjoy it, The break was about an hour long so that could affect this, but I do enjoy this a lot. Softer vocals by Matt this time, I have noticed that most of the album is shouting. I like this softer thing though, and the build up into the heavier part is really good. The heavy part is genuinely one of the best bits of this album so far. The Guitar solo is alright. After that there is a really good ending with backing vocals and some decent lyrics by the sound of it, which this album seemed short of.

8. Riot
Second single from this album, So I’ve heard this a bit as well. The song itself is really good, it builds up into… Nothing, no sorry “RIOT!” which was ****. It ruins the song. It should of been a better chorus. There is a gap where Matt could have sang but instead it guitar playing the same note. The actual melodic “Whoa” is good, there just isn’t much there after. The solo seemed a bit Megadeth to me which I like being a fan of theirs. If the chorus was better this would’ve been one of the best songs on this album. The fact that it isn’t a good chorus down grades the song completely and makes it one of the worst. Small things like this can make or break songs and albums and sadly this one broke.

9. Saints & Sinners
Good riff, lyrics at the beginning again not terrible which we’ve had a lot of. A lot of shouting again but not a lot of screaming. But then you hear the repetition you hear in everything else in this album. My guitar tutor told me you can make a song sound like it should be off a bands album by just studying them for a week and this song for me echos that idea in my head more. Could I make this song in a week or maybe a better one that sounds like it’s off this album? This song: Average.

10. Tears Don’t Fall (Part 2)
This is the one most people were probably curious about. “Let’s Go Again” Oh god. This was also shown to me by my friend/band mate and it does sound like a bad rip off of the first song, but saying that, It’s one of the better songs on this album. It’s not as bad as other things on this album. After the last song sounding like a copy of everything else on this album, this song plays and you re-think that. The end says lyrics from the first one, reminds me of Metallica’s The Unforgiven II (I love ‘Tallica) Just a good track, Even though it is no where near as good as the first one, I feel like the fans will gobble this up and make it a popular song.

11. Livin’ Life (On The Edge Of A Knife)
I’m liking this one, it’s as if Tears Don’t Fall picks the Album back up to make this song, which closes the album well. More screaming than the other songs, saying that I still feel it needs more screaming, less shouting. Lyrics aren’t terrible from what I can hear which is good. The content in this song is much better than most songs on this album. I felt like Head banging to this one, which was good. Too bad the rest of the album wasn’t the same.

Overall: Temper Temper has a lot of bad things with it, and I can’t help but feel like I’ve lost a bit of respect for Bullet and Matt Tuck (doesn’t help he cut his awesome hair) but I can see where they were trying to go with it. IF they ever try and re-visit this idea, they should take longer about it, because I don’t think they were far off getting this one half decent. It also reminds me of St. Anger by Metallica. That album was made to be angry and I feel this one was to. Both, however, fail to complete this job. The shouting was supposed to go with the angry style of the album but I wasn’t liking it, I respect them taking the music in a different direction, but I don’t feel it fully worked. The songs needed to be looked at and re-thinked about, because the worst thing a band can do is create repetition in an album. Album’s are supposed to have distinctive styles, usually that comes naturally, but there is a line between album style and repetition and I really feel like this album went over the line too much. Now don’t get me wrong here, Vocally the repetition didn’t really happen, one song, what I mean is the guitars, verses sounded the same and weren’t interesting. You end up feeling like you’re sick of it. It seems the worst of this album is scattered in the middle of it. The good songs on this album open and close it, which is wise. The good songs will definitely become popular but the bad songs will forever be hated on. I feel like these good songs will become classics even with all the bad reviews from critics, the fact of the matter is fans don’t give a crap about what critics think. Even though there is a lot of early fans disappointed there is many new fans loving this album. For me, I am sticking with an Average Rating.
