This is some super funk right here put out in '78. Some creative and interesting instrument choices too that add some spice to the song. There are some groovy flutes, dramatic strings, and a keyboard. That beginning just kills me because of that string arrangement with those little guitar notes thrown in the middle there. But the real action starts when Rick's backup singers go "Do do dooo dooooooo, Mary Jaaaaneeee" and Rick James joins in. I'm really don't think Rick's vocals are anything too awe inspiring, but because he has such fun and funky songs I don't really notice it. I should probabaly also add that the content of this song (Rick expressing his love for Mary Jane [weed]) has made it a favorite of weed smokers around the world.
